The Royal Life Saving Society recently reported that 35 infants and toddlers drowned in Australia last year.
Royal Life Saving’s ‘Keep Watch’ program stresses the importance of supervision. Regardless of the aquatic location, supervision means being within arm’s reach of your children whenever they are in, on or around water. Drowning deaths can occur in the time it takes to answer the doorbell, run and get a change of clothes or make a cup of coffee. Drowning is swift and silent which is why parents must be within arm’s reach of young children in water.
The ‘Keep Watch’ program consists of four key tips:

  1. Young children need to be supervised constantly (within arm’s reach) whenever they are in, on or around water
  2. Restricting a young child’s access to water either by putting a barrier around the water or around the child is also effective in preventing drowning deaths
  3. Undertaking water familiarisation with your child will help you to become aware of the dangers
  4. Learning resuscitation can help if an incident does occur. Learning these techniques today may save your child’s life.

Water familiarisation classes build confidence and introduce children to basic water safety; and learning to swim is a vital skill for all ages, especially children. Ensuring your child receives quality teaching is important – because learning to swim is a skill for life. Enrolling your child in a ‘Learn to Swim’ class with a qualified teacher will ensure they are provided with appropriate skills.

Fanny Durack Swim School conducts lessons for all ages and abilities. Lessons run throughout the year. Intensive Learn-To-Swim programs are run throughout all school holidays.

The programs are structured to promote water familiarisation, safety, correct stroke technique and personal development and are taught in an enjoyable and safe environment. Our Austswim certified instructors are caring and friendly and will guide each student from a non-swimmer to a proficient, confident and safe swimmer.
For bookings, please call the Fanny Durack Aquatic Centre  or e-mail

The lesson format is the Royal Life Saving Society Swim & Survive Program, incorporating rescue and survival techniques throughout the learn to swim lessons.

Tips for Parents to make the most out of their child's lesson!

Parents Guide to Enjoyable Swimming Lessons

  1. Try to arrive relaxed and positive, especially if the experience of swimming lessons is new. Your child will feel calm and secure and lessons will be more successful.
  2. Have a dress rehearsal at home so your child is used to swimwear and goggles.
  3. Arrive early so you and your child can become acquainted with the surroundings and will not be flustered or rushed.
  4. Toilet your child just prior to their lesson to avoid accidents and disruption during swimming lessons.
  5. Goggles are a vital teaching aid at various stages of the learning process. They allow the child good vision and comfort underwater. It is great for children to have their own and arrive ready for class (nose piece and strap adjusted to their individual needs). Goggles can also be used for practice in between swmming lessons.
  6. The wearing of bathing caps is strongly recommended to keep hair out of the eyes and mouth and allow goggles to slip on more easily. They also help enormously with filtration and therefore pool cleanliness. In some instances, they are compulsory to wear.
  7. For their own safety, it is essential that children do not enter the pool before or after their scheduled swimming lesson times. This also reduces distractions to children in other classes.
  8. Please stay back from the pool edge, while swimming lessons are in progress. It’s great to encourage your child, but try to leave the teaching and discipline to the swimming teacher.
  9. Bring a suitable ‘hanky’ for wiping the inevitable runny nose. Please use the bins provided for disposal.
  10. For safety and respect for other patrons, ensure your child walks and doesn’t run in the centre.
  11. Be considerate of others, for example, if children are having a shower, make it brief so that other users are not inconvenienced.
